Innovate UK is part of UK Research and Innovation. It is focused on helping UK businesses develop through innovation, the new products, services, and processes they need to grow and scale up. It supports innovative ideas and business growth through tailored support, grant funding, and loans or procurements.
Since 2004, the organisations that were awarded the most number of Innovate UK grants were UK Universities and Rolls Royce. Although, Rolls Royce has not been in the top 20 for number of grants awarded by Innovate UK since 2019.
However, the high percentage of the business base receiving funding in Cambridge and Oxford is not solely due to their university presence, but a high concentration of nearby STEM companies completing innovative work. Example companies are: ARM and NIAB in Cambridge; Amgen and TWI in South Cambridgeshire; the Vaccines Manufacturing and Innovation Centre and Oxa in Oxford; Satellite Applications Catapult and The Faraday Institution in Vale of White Horse.Orkney stands out as a region that has received a large amount of funding, particularly for the renewable energy sector. This funding was concentrated in fewer, larger, rounds. Example companies include Orbital Marine Power and The European Marine Energy Centre.
Key companies like Inventya and the Hartree Centre contributed to Halton's high percentage of Innnovate UK funding.
